A comment on theology

Hebrews 9 Series Introduction

The following series of articles discusses the context, theme and the message of Hebrews 9.

Hebrews 9 has been an intense theological battleground for Adventists and this chapter may be one of the most emotionally and theologically charged chapter in the Bible. Adventist theologians have taken up positions here in defense of historical doctrines while "liberal" students have marched in with the battle cry "freedom for our people!"

Though both sides have won skirmishes, and each has provided insightful material on the chapter, one can't help feeling that each side in an attempt to strengthen their theological case has constructed what I call "Reactionary Theology". As one side wages another assault with stronger arguments the other strengthens their defenses and in the process moves further into an extreme and imbalanced position. Each is more intent on keeping an eye on the other and in the process loses sight of the true message and context of the passage.

So, if we were to do something radical, say, let the writer of Hebrews speak for himself and tell us what chapter 9 is saying, what message would emerge? If we were to step out of the battle for a moment and examine the passage again, but this time without all the emotion and commotion, is it possible that strength and beauty still exist on this scorched field?

The purpose of this series is to take a step back, draw in a deep breath, and attempt to rediscover message contained in Hebrews 9. In the process, we will find that there is indeed a beauty and a message that has been shielded from the warfare, one awaiting discovery by open and eager listeners.
